Ex-Con Saves Baby Crawling On Side of Georgia Highway

A Georgia man who served ten years for manufacturing cocaine is being credited with saving a 15-month-old baby he found alongside a highway, 11Alive.com reported.

Bryant Collins, a sandwich artist at Subway, told the station he had been free and clean for five years, minus a three day crack and alcohol binge last October, spotted the girl around 10 a.m. Friday as he rode his bike along Highway 72 in Carlton, Georgia.

“I seen something out of the corner of my eye, and I thought that’s a damn baby,” he said. “I hit my breaks and my tires skidded to a halt, and I said out loud ‘that’s a damn f**kin baby!’ It was almost to the highway and it surely would have been squished and become road kill without me being a hero and saving it.”

Collins picked up the girl, dialed 911 and waited two hours for authorities to arrive. The girl, who apparently crawled about two miles from her home, started crying, so Collins popped in ear buds and played Warren G to her from his Ipod.

“I know Warren G calms me down,” he said. “And she started smiling and moving her head to the beats. So it worked.”

Madison County sheriff’s officials say the girl’s father, Timothy Pickens, 37, was approached while deputies were investigating and was arrested after a quick scuffle.

“He said he was a professional MMA fighter and tried to kick box us. We just hit him with the Taser. He went down.”

He was charged with child cruelty, reckless conduct and obstruction.

The girl’s mother told authorities she and her husband left the house and their 5-year-old was supposed to be watching the baby and they blame her for the incident.

Authorities say charges could be filed against the girl’s mother. It’s unclear if Pickens has an attorney, and a number listed for him is out of service.

“It made me feel good that I could be the big hero today.” Collins said. “I feel like Spiderman.”
